South Bucks

South Bucks is one of four local government districts in the county of Buckinghamshire.

It was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of Beaconsfield urban district and part of Eton Rural District. It was originally known as Beaconsfield, but adopted its present name in 1980. It is formally called 'South Bucks' rather than 'South Buckinghamshire'.

South Bucks is one of the wealthiest areas in the country. It is home to over 64,000 people and is blessed with a wealth of beautiful parkland, numerous historic houses and buildings, rivers and inland water areas, world-class facilities, places to stay, pubs and restaurants and well-visited tourist attractions.

The Chilterns

The district is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with 86% being designated as Metropolitan Green Belt. The population is 89,300 (Nov 2004) of which one third live in Chesham and Amersham.

A study in 2008 by Halifax named the Chilterns as being an area with the highest quality of life in Britain. According to the research, local people can expect to earn the highest average salaries of any rural local authority, more than £45,000 a year. Some eight out of 10 people own their own homes while those dwellings are considerably larger than normal, boasting 6.3 rooms on average.
